Author gets solid 3 stars for writing style and story concept. There was a ton of potential with the idea, unfortunately it became a DNF for me for the reasons I deducted 2 stars. First being character consistency. We are led to believe h is totally on board with using H for her own sexual gratification (hats off to that) but then does a complete 180 making her strength look weak. The H is similar, threatening in his inner monologue but fails following through, it makes him come off as incompetent and slightly spineless. The end result; both mc's feel convoluted and fickle at times.Second star deduction was a big one and probably only applies to those of us who have lived in Maine for any length of time. I grew up in mid coast Maine and the logistics of the setting killed me in the finer details. A strip club in a small shiny tourist town holds zero water for me. The author clearly has no clue where Maine tourist come from, because it sure AF isn't predominantly Portland, Augusta and Quebec. Try Mass, CT & NY. I could go on a whole rant over this, but I will stop there.I made it to the 60% mark, and it was a frustrating DNF, because as I said the writing style was smooth and I was invested in the plot, I just lost faith in the character plausibility and the setting that was so far into fantasy I found it annoyingly distracting, constantly pulling me out of the narrative. Sweet Surrender by Sav R. Miller is a dark mafia enemies to lovers romance. This is the first book in the King's Trace Antiheroes series.The book does come with a caution “This book explores dark, sometimes troublesome themes, and has graphic content, including graphic violence, sexually explicit scenes, discussions of abuse, and profanity. It is not suitable for all audiences. Reader discretion advised.”This is the first book of Sav's that I have read and it definitely won't be my last. I loved Elia and Caroline together. Both of their pasts and dark and messy but you can't help but root for them. I really enjoyed getting both Elia and Caroline's points of views throughout the story. It really brings the story to life.I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series Sweet Solitude so I can get Kieran and Juliet's story.I would recommend this book if you like mafia romances, dark romances, or enemies to lovers.
