5+++ stars! If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. This book is incredible. Wow. Damage Control grabbed me from the very beginning and kept a tight hold even after I had finished. In fact, I read it twice before finally sitting down to try to explain in this review exactly what makes this book so powerful. This book is well-balanced and brilliantly written. It is snarky and passionate and painful, and it brings to light something that makes me feel a bit murderous as a member of the LGBTQA+ community: conversion therapy. I think, far beyond anything else though, it is because this book is just so REAL. It is raw, gritty, bitterly honest, and at times heartbreaking. At the same time, it is also funny, emotional, sweet, and so freaking HOT (seriously guys - the chemistry between Josh and Tyler could have set my kindle on fire!). I experienced every emotion I possibly could while reading this book: I laughed, I cried, I got angry and wanted to throw my kindle.. I was horrified at times, incredulous at others, and so happy I couldn't stop smiling at yet others.. At times I felt disappointed in them, and other times I was so proud it was as if I knew the characters personally. So basically, it is everything I could ever want out of any book, MM or otherwise. Read it, guys.. This is one debut you do NOT want to miss. **Note: Do not ignore the trigger warnings - they are there for a reason!**"You are interesting. You have depth. Nuance. Layers. So many layers I'm not sure if I'll ever uncover them all. You are art, Tyler, and I think I could spend the rest of my life studying you and not get tired." - JoshThat really sums up Tyler perfectly, but at the same time Josh himself has more layers than I think he might even realize. Tyler and Josh are fantastic MCs for so many reasons. Both men have pasts that have left scars on them, some more literal than others. They are each well-developed, complex characters that I fell in love with almost immediately. As with any couple, both Tyler and Josh have their flaws - both individually and as a couple. Their journey is a difficult one, but it is worth every second. Sure, there were times I wanted to slap one (sometimes both at the same time), but it never lasted long and I still loved them through it all. Both men show significant character growth over the course of the book. They are definitely not perfect, but they ARE perfect for each other. I think they say it best themselves: "If you say I complete you then I won't be responsible for my actions," Tyler growled. A short burst of laughter escaped from Josh. "Your ragged edges mesh with my ragged edges. How's that?" "Eh. Acceptable."The supporting characters in this book all played significant roles. I adore Tyler's best friend Purvi. ADORE her. I am so glad Tyler has her in his corner. I could easily read an entire book filled with nothing but texting conversations between Tyler and Purvi and I would love every single second of it! As for Ryan.. um. Well. First, Ryan plays a HUGE role in this book so there was no escaping him. He is Tyler's brother and Josh's ex.. best friend (*insert eye roll here*). The thing with Ryan is that I could never realize decide if I hated his condescending, smug self or if I felt bad for him. In the end, it was both. Well, okay.. maybe not hate, but I still don't like him much. I understand more about him now (and you will too by the end), and my heart hurts for him in a way, but not nearly enough to excuse things he has said and done. That said, I would really, really like a Ryan book. I want to see him become the Ryan he would have been if not for his father. I know that sounds vague, but I do not want to spoil anything so I will leave it at that and just say you must read this book to understand. I wanted to hug Tyler's other brother Brad quite a bit. I also liked Josh's sister Rachel, that spitfire, even if she is .. rather abrasive at times. Fiery little thing! As for Tyler's parents and Josh's parents, well... let's just say I felt really stabby at times. Agh, my heart is breaking for Tyler all over again just thinking about his parents. Again, you will have to read to see why.Damage Control is sure to become a stand-out in the MM world. Yes, it is long, but do not let the length scare you if you are typically a fan of shorter books: it never felt drawn-out or fluffy in any way. The length of the book is necessary, I think, to truly tell the story the way it needed to be told... and even after 500 pages, I wanted MORE - as demonstrated by my reading it twice in a matter of days. With this gripping and poignant debut novel, Lynn Van Dorn has burst onto the MM scene in a big way and I can't wait to see what she comes out with next. I cannot recommend this book enough - it is worth every second and every tear shed. Ms. Van Dorn has found an avid fan in this reader. I hope she does in you, too. I hate to leave a bad review for an author, in this case, go into this book knowing that it plods along at a snail pace. Between the word dump and including every family dysfunction except drug/alcohol addiction, except to nod off at any time. I literally forced myself to read each page to the end. One quarter of this book should have been left on the floor, another quarter condensed into shorter meaningful sentences and paragraphs. The other half of the book wasn't bad yet there wasn't enough good to make this author an auto buy. She included full history of all the family members. In the case of the brother, all he needed was two paragraphs in the final chapter to complete his story. There seriously no need for her waste time writing novels about any of the other family members. Her Reunion story was much better. I hope she finds an editor that she trusts and is willing to let the editor take scissors to future novels, so there isn't a repeat of this one. There is potential for Ms VanDorn to be a great author.
